1000 steps to calories calculation by height
Consider three athletes having the same weight 160 pounds (73kg) but different heights. Why is height a great determinant? Height determines your step length and strides. A tall person makes fewer steps to cover a mile, while a short person makes many steps to cover the same mile distance.
On average. Average step length is about 2.6 feet or roughly 31 inches. Shorter guys might have step length as small as 20 inches or fewer. SO short people walk many steps than tall person over same distance, so their calories burned for 1000 steps would differ.
- Weight for each of the 3 person, weight = 160 lb;
- Calories burned walking one mile for the 3 persons = 160 x 0.57 = 91.2 calories per mile
The factor 0.57 describes your calories burned per mile if you were walking casually and slowly at 2mph for half an hour.

How many calories burned for an obese person walking 1000 steps? Is it the same calories for a normal weight person?
Let me pick three athletes having same height 6 feet but different weights in pounds. It is been proven that people with excessive weight or excess body fat percentage burn more calories that normal weight individuals to cover a mile.
A 300 pound female athlete would burn more calories than a 200 pound active lady, walking equal distance and making same 1000 steps. These athletes are of tall height, our consideration is that they have almost the same step length. Tall people have an average step length of 2.6 feet and that is why they can walk 2000 steps per mile at normal pace.

How many steps to burn 1000 calories?
A 6 feet tall, 250 pound athlete is likely to walk 14000 steps to burn 1000 calories of energy. Burning 1000 calories depends on many factors – weight, intensity, time, height, terrain and more. But here is how I estimated the number of steps a 250 lb person needs to burn 1Kcal of energy.
Weight: 250 lb
Calories burned walking 1 mile = 250 x 0.57 = 142.5 cal per mile
Steps per mile = 2000 (average steps per mile for tall people over 5’11”)
Calories per step (conversion factor) = 142.5 calories per mile / 2000 steps per mile = 0.07125
Calories burned cal = conversion factor x step
- 1000 calories = 0.07125x steps.
- Number of steps = 1000/0.07125 or 14035 steps.
